At a Shoppers Drug Mart® in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the connection between Associate-Owner Sonal Purohit and her father, Bachu Purohit, is one of deep respect, shared purpose, and devoted support. Working under the same roof, they’ve built a partnership that blends decades of experience with genuine care - for each other and their community.

Bachu, joined Shoppers Drug Mart in 1979, working in pharmacy after immigrating to Canada from East Africa. A man of loyalty, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to patient care, Bachu remained at the same store until his retirement.

"I stayed with the company for four decades," he says, "committed to sustaining excellence for the employer who first opened the door for me in Canada. I am proud of the value and experience I have brought to the business, the patients, and the team, and I have felt valued and appreciated throughout my tenure."

Sonal's journey with Shoppers Drug Mart began in 1997 while she was a university student. She joined as a cashier and quickly realized that being a part of Shoppers was more than just a job; it was an opportunity to connect with people and make a real difference in their day. Inspired by her father’s work in pharmacy, she too pursued a career in the field and grew into her current role as an Associate. "My father is one of the anchors of my life," says Sonal. "His influence, words, and actions have shaped me into the person I am today. What I’ve achieved is a reflection of his advice and the examples he set. His wisdom in healthcare always centres on treating everyone with the highest dignity, humility, and kindness. Gaining respect and trust is the greatest wealth, and I live by those words every day."

After his retirement in 2020, Bachu returned to support his daughter at her store, by assisting patients, and stepping in wherever needed. "He still goes above and beyond to make sure our customers and patients are looked after," Sonal says. "It’s inspiring to see that level of dedication."

Bachu's pride in his daughter is palpable. "I am very proud to see my daughter follow in my footsteps," he says. "She models compassionate behaviour showing empathy and kindness to others. She is career-driven, passionate, and shows perseverance. She motivates and inspires others through strong values and a positive outlook.”

Beyond the store, Sonal and Bachu cherish simple moments together from music, conversation, and catching up on life. In their busy world, time together is a true luxury, a reminder that their bond remains the most valuable treasure, extending beyond the pharmacy walls.

In her office, Sonal keeps a physical reminder of the legacy she’s carrying forward: a pair of her father’s old shoes. "It’s a symbol for me," she says. "Every time I walk into the dispensary, I remind myself that I have big shoes to fill – and with every step, I hope to make him proud.
