Driving change: Cara's road to trucking success
March 6, 2025

For one determined woman, a childhood fascination with trucks blossomed into a successful ten-year career, shattering stereotypes, and navigating the open road in a field traditionally dominated by men.
Cara Welsh, one of only nine female drivers at Loblaw, began her trucking career a decade ago in the UK before relocating to Canada. Starting with a small mail truck, she gradually advanced into the broader transport industry, gaining expertise behind the wheel of Class 1 vehicles, including heavy trucks carrying loads exceeding 11,000 kg. Her career has spanned continents, offering her a unique perspective on the nuances of the trucking industry in both the UK and North America.
“My interest in driving semi-trucks began at a very young age,” says Cara. “My stepfather was a trucker, and my sisters and I used to take turns going out on trips with him.” Those memorable trips with her stepfather led to her career as a truck driver.
Cara never initially saw herself behind the wheel; she began in the fitness industry until she realized it wasn’t the right fit, prompting her to take a leap of faith by training to drive Class 1 vehicles—much like her stepfather.
Once she was in Canada, she encountered not only a new geographic landscape but also a distinct cultural shift: larger trucks, less congested roads, and more accommodating facilities. Yet, the most striking difference she observed was the prevailing attitude. Reflecting on her experience, Cara states, "I do not feel discriminated against as a woman driver; I think it is reflective of the current times and how we have progressed in equality."
Her journey hasn't been without its challenges. Navigating an industry dominated by men required resilience and a refusal to be deterred. But for her, the rewards far outweigh the obstacles. Cara feels lucky to be able to witness some stunning views on her long drives. One time, she was amazed to see the Aurora Borealis while driving through the Canadian Rockies – a sight that she will never forget.
She sees a future where more women take the wheel, a vision reinforced by her encounters with fellow female truckers on the road. Her advice to other women considering a similar path? "Don’t allow any negativity to deter you. It will be tough, but it will be worth it," she says.
