Cameron Hyjek’s career at Loblaw began when he was just 17, working part-time at ZehrsTM Conestoga Mall in Waterloo, Ont. Initially a student job, it quickly became a meaningful foundation for his professional journey. Working in-store taught Cameron the essentials of customer service, operations, and teamwork—skills he continues to leverage today.
Reflecting on his beginnings, Cameron notes, “I wouldn't be where I am today without the opportunities given to me at Zehrs Conestoga.”
Encouraged by his department manager, Daryl Bridge, Cameron decided to look beyond the store level and applied to Loblaw’s internship program. He saw the internship as more than just another job; it was his opportunity to build a long-term career.
Within a year, Cameron progressed from Intern to Associate Merchant and now holds his current role as Merchant overseeing the national bulk foods portfolio. His rapid advancement underscores his determination and relationship-building skills, fostered by the guidance and mentorship he received along the way. Cameron credits Loblaw’s supportive culture for helping him grow professionally and personally, noting, “Leaders here genuinely invest in people and their success.”
Today, Cameron remains focused on driving growth, maximizing impact, and fostering a customer-centric mindset. He takes particular pride in projects that energize and engage the bulk foods category, overseeing processes like flyer promotions to supply chain collaboration and vendor negotiations.
Looking ahead, Cameron is clear about his ambitions. Driven by a passion for leadership and helping others succeed, he aspires to inspire and mentor future leaders. “I’ve always wanted to be a leader and a role model,” Cameron says, motivated by opportunities to build strong teams and share the mentorship that propelled his own growth.
His advice to others seeking career growth at Loblaw is straightforward: "Be consistent, communicate clearly, stay flexible, trust yourself, and remain open to feedback."
Cameron’s journey—from a local Zehrs in Waterloo to influencing national assortments at Loblaw—highlights the career possibilities available for those who actively seek growth, embrace mentorship, and clearly articulate their ambitions. “It’s important to lead, inspire, and help others succeed. When one of us grows, we all grow.”
