Sylvain Lemieux isn't just the Senior Director of Merchandising for the Hard Discount Division at Loblaw; he's a bridge connecting innovation and community. With over 25 years immersed in the food industry, Sylvain's story is one of passion, vision, and a relentless drive to make a difference.
"I knew early on that every product, every display, told a story," Sylvain reflects. From his early days as a grocery clerk, to price and promotion and merchandising, he absorbed the nuances of the business, learning that every detail contributes to the customer experience. This understanding has been the compass guiding his career.
“Moving into a broader role pushed me to think beyond the numbers,” he explains. His work on the no name stores pilot was not just about driving sales; it was about reimagining the shopping experience and proving that retail can be both smart and compassionate. His strategic vision and passion for good food and culinary experience also fueled exciting collaborations, including one with Chef Jonathan Garnier that resulted in a ready-to-eat product line blending culinary excellence with affordability—a project that underscored his belief that good ideas come from listening and learning from every corner of the organization.
Beyond these initiatives, Sylvain champions local sourcing across the country, including the Quebec vendors community. He and his team actively cultivate relationships with regional suppliers, providing Hard Discount customers with the best Canada has to offer. “We are deeply committed to supporting our local economy by partnering with regional vendors,” says Sylvain. “This not only provides our customers with the freshest, highest quality products but also strengthens our community ties.”
Yet, Sylvain’s impact extends well beyond the office and his commitment to community shines brightly. He serves as the official ambassador of Moisson Montréal, the largest food bank in the country, and actively participates in fundraising events for the President's Choice Children's Charity, helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.
Sylvain leverages his industry relationships to support those who need it most, ensuring that every initiative at work resonates with a positive impact outside the company. His journey, marked by invaluable lessons, continues to inspire his colleagues and reaffirms that at the heart of every successful business lies a commitment to community and opportunity.
