As we bid farewell to 2023, it's time to reflect on our top stories of the year – which all happen to relate to our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives.

So, what does this mean? Clearly ESG is top of mind for everyone, which is evident in the stories that received the most viewership and attention.

Here are our five most popular stories of 2023:

  1. Powering our business with wind, sun, and water:(Open in a new tab) This year, we made an unprecedented carbon-free energy purchase in Alberta, leveraging renewable solutions. This initiative will help eliminate the carbon footprint of our electricity purchases in Alberta, reducing our nationwide enterprise operating emissions by 17%.

  2. No plastic stone left behind:(Open in a new tab) We committed to making all of our control brand and in-store plastic packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. We've adopted the Golden Design Rules (GDR) for plastic packaging, developed by the Consumer Goods Forum’s Coalition for Action on Plastic Waste. We've already achieved 45% compliance and have a plan to reach 100% by 2025.

  3. Quo Beauty's bold step towards a more sustainable future:(Open in a new tab) We launched “More Planet Love” by Quo BeautyTM, a collection of over 40 new products designed to reduce the amount of plastic waste going to landfills. The entire line of products is vegan, cruelty-free, and PETA-certified.

  4. What I need you to know about food waste:(Open in a new tab) We've established a Food Waste Reduction Committee, led by Jonathan Carroll, to develop the relationships, processes, and reporting mechanisms required for Loblaw to send zero food waste to landfill by 2030. We're using common sense and innovation to prevent good food from going to waste and ensure it gets utilized in its entirety.

  5. Five highlights from the ESG Report:(Open in a new tab) Our 2022 ESG Report demonstrates our commitment to the environment, social diversity, and ethical corporate governance practices. We've made significant strides in reducing our carbon footprint, reducing plastic waste, eliminating food waste, increasing diversity and inclusion, and supporting our local communities and the health and wellbeing of children and women.

These stories reflect our ongoing commitment to ESG initiatives and our dedication to helping Canadians Live Life Well. We look forward to continuing this important work in 2024 and beyond.
