Our greatest opportunity for impact is reducing our Scope 3 emissions.
While it represents challenges, tackling Scope 3 emissions is of critical importance to our plan to fight climate change and achieve our net-zero ambition by 2050. To succeed, strong data collection and collaboration across the value chain is required. That is why in late 2023, we increased our transparency by disclosing our plan to tackle Scope 3 emissions, which included a call to action sent to all our largest vendors asking them to #JoinTheCarbonFight and report their GHG emissions and reductions. As part of this work, we announced a new interim target to ensure suppliers from whom we source 70% of our volume by spend will set science-based targets1 by 2027.
Greenhouse gases are changing our planet. Burning fossil fuels for energy has added too many of these gases, like carbon dioxide (CO₂), to the atmosphere. Since 2011, we’ve been taking action within our own operations. And we’ve invested over $40 million in more than 500 carbon reduction projects, successfully cutting emissions from our business operations by 16% since 2020. Then in 2021 we set the bar even higher: reach net-zero emissions across our full enterprise.
We looked at our total footprint and discovered a powerful truth: over 97% of our emissions come from our extended value chain. And our success is tied to yours. Through partnerships and programs like the LOCT Climate School, we’re committed to helping you succeed. We’re inviting our broad base of global supplier partners to join us on this mission.

CDP
CDP is a global non-profit that runs the world's leading environmental disclosure system. It is widely considered the gold standard for corporate environmental reporting. By reporting through their standardized framework, suppliers can measure, manage, and showcase their climate performance to customers and investors using a single, globally-recognized platform.

Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition (LOCT)
Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition (LOCT) is a global initiative that brings together thousands of suppliers to share best practices, navigate common challenges, and gain the skills needed for decarbonization. Our Climate School is built on LOCT's action-oriented curriculum, connecting our suppliers to this powerful global peer network.
Take Action
How to move from mission to mandate
Completing a course is a major achievement. Now it’s time to put that knowledge into action. Here’s how to make an impact that’s immediate but built to last:
Any journey begins with clarity. By consistently tracking your emissions and reporting them annually to CDP, you create a clear benchmark for success and demonstrate your commitment to transparency.
This is where your Climate School training takes flight. Put your plan into action by investing in high-impact projects like switching to renewable energy, improving fleet efficiency, or innovating your packaging.

Get Informed
Scope 1: Direct Emissions These are emissions from sources your company directly owns or controls. This includes fuel burned in your own facilities (like boilers or furnaces) and in your company-owned vehicles.
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy These are the emissions generated on your behalf to produce the electricity, heat, steam, or cooling that your company purchases and consumes. While you don't generate them yourself, they are a direct result of your energy use.
Scope 3: Indirect Emissions from the Value Chain This is the most comprehensive category, covering all other indirect emissions that occur in your company's value chain but are from sources you don't own or control. This includes everything from the raw materials you buy to the transportation of your products and their eventual disposal.
The best way to start is by taking the first step toward building your climate expertise. The LOCT Climate School is designed to empower you with practical skills. You will learn everything from calculating your carbon footprint to setting credible reduction targets.
Because we are committed to this journey together, the entire program is available to our suppliers at no charge.

No. Loblaw covers all the expenses, so there is no financial commitment to join us.
Each course will run for four months and include: 4 webinars, 3 assignments, 3 office hours, and supporting resources on the learning platform. Course completion requirements vary but typically include the 4 webinars and 3 assignments. Upon completing these requirements, suppliers receive a course completion certificate.
The assignment will be reviewed by the course instructors at Supplier LOCT. The requirements and criteria differs across courses. You may find the relevant information in the course material, and reach out to the course instructors through email or the office hour session to ask for guidance to complete the assigment.
That's a fantastic achievement and the most critical first step in any climate journey. Your baseline is the foundation—now it's time to build on it by turning that data into a plan.
The next logical and most powerful step is to set a credible reduction target. A baseline tells you where you are; a target tells you where you're going. We strongly recommend setting a science-based target (SBT) to ensure your goal is ambitious, credible, and aligned with global climate science.
The target-setting course is designed specifically for companies in your position. It will walk you through the entire process, from modeling a target using your own data to navigating the official submission and approval process with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The webinars schedule will be announced after you are enrolled in thr course. If you cannot attent the live session, you and your team members can watch the recorded webinar on the learning platform at your own convenince.
