From burnt down to reopening in record time
May 15, 2026

For a town like Salisbury, N.B., the local grocery store is more than just a place to buy food. It’s a meeting spot, a source of familiar faces, and part of the rhythm of everyday life. When Walker’s Your Independent GrocerTM (YIG) burned down, it impacted everyone.
The timing could not have been worse. Store Owners James and Willow Walker had just taken ownership only six days earlier, full of excitement to serve their new neighbours. Then, in an instant, their dream and the town’s only grocery store was gone.
The loss was felt immediately. With the next store more than 20 kilometers away, simple grocery runs became a challenge. But in that challenging moment, the community’s spirit, and the Walkers’ commitment, came into focus.
While the town waited, the company stepped in to bridge the gap. Shuttle services to nearby Real Canadian Superstore® locations became a lifeline for residents and free PC ExpressTM service helped ease the burden in the months that followed. It was a clear promise to the people of Salisbury: they had not been forgotten.
Behind the scenes, a monumental effort was underway. James and Willow were determined to rebuild, and to do it quickly. “The community needed us, and we didn’t want to let them down,” says James. True to their word, the entire store was reconstructed in just eight months, an unusually fast turnaround for a project of that scale.
They also used the opportunity to redesign the store with customers in mind, adding new departments as well as PC Express pickup and Flashfood. Together, those updates make shopping easier and bring even more convenience to the community. “We rebuilt this store in a record-breaking time and are so excited to welcome the community back,” Willow shares proudly.
Today, the new store stands as a bright and welcoming symbol of resilience. But the true heart of the store is its people. In a powerful testament to the store's culture, nearly all 45 of the original employees have returned to their roles. The familiar faces that the town knows and trusts are back, ready to greet customers by name.
The return of Walker’s YIG is more than just a store reopening. It’s a story of resilience, community, and what’s possible when people come together around a place that matters. For Salisbury, this is more than a fresh start. It is the return of something familiar, built again for the community that calls it home.
